She is best known for her role as Donna Hayward in the television series Twin Peaks (her first major role) and as Assistant District Attorney Helen Gamble in television series The Practice. She has also appeared in films such as Happiness and Men in Black II; though her first film role was a small part (which was ultimately cut) in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), but which earned her a SAG card. Ironically, she was initially beat out by Ally McBeal’s Calista Flockhart for the role of Ally in 1997. Boyle was in a two-year relationship with Twin Peaks co-star Kyle MacLachlan and also dated comedian David Spade. Her relationship with Jack Nicholson probably brought her the most attention in terms of controversial hook-ups. The couple went public with their May/December romance at the 1999 Emmys, and remained together until the end of 2000.
