Both psychological and suspense elements, the dark mystery series set in the melting Arctic reveals the tale of the tiny idyllic town of Fortitude, whose quiet life is broken after a vicious and disturbing murder. Above-average temperatures contribute to a record melting of ice that exposes mysteries that have long been buried under the frozen landscape. The inquiry is headed by Sheriff Dan Anderssen (Richard Dormer) who is forced to operate with DCI Morton (Stanley Tucci), an investigator who has flown from the mainland into town to lend his investigative skills. Their number of suspects – and assumptions of each other – increases as the hunt for the murderer continues.
Gripping Arctic thriller Fortitude was one of the greatest television successes of 2015. Its beautiful setting and gripping plot kept audiences hostage across the globe. Now, it’s back for a fresh and pacy series with Dennis Quaid (The Big Easy), Ken Stott (The Hobbit Trilogy), Parminder Nagra (The Blacklist), Robert Sheehan (Misfits) and Michelle Fairley (Game of Thrones) all joining their foreign stellar cast. The danger of pests from season one has passed, but the inhabitants are already leaving the Arctic city in droves. Those who stay in the Fortitude fight on, cut off from the mainland. Nevertheless, nature is growing impatient and volatile in the wilderness.
When the sky turns bright, the locals are scared that this is a poor omen for the area. Sheriff Dan Anderssen (Richard Dormer) is believed dead, having died after the shooting of Elena. His assault threatens to traumatize Vincent (Luke Treadaway), and Hildur (Sofie Grabol) is trying to hang on to her marriage and her office. Eric (Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson) struggles to move into Dan’s shoes, leaving a fragile group of Ingrid and Petra to police them.
Fresh faces are being dragged into the vortex of Fortitude, like the stepfather of Ingrid, Michael (Quaid). As a fisherman, he is struggling to collect money for his sick wife to purchase medication, and desperate times call for desperate steps. Ambitious beginner Dr. Surinder Khatri (Nagra) spotts an opening at the research center that inspires her to stretch both medical and ethical limits. Then, the horrendous demise of Fortitude bricks. It points out that what seems like a reckless mistake involving a snowplough is a barbaric assassination. A mysterious new man becomes hell-bent on killing an ancient spirit he claims has descended upon Fortitude and its residents while the police team investigates. Among the herd, there’s a demon and it has to be thwarted, no matter what the implications…
