Former Trump Adviser Steve Bannon Found Guilty For Refusing To Testify to The Committee
A former adviser to Donald Trump in the White House, Steve Bannon, was found guilty on Friday on two charges of contempt for Congress during a preliminary hearing in a Washington, D.C., government court.
Bannon was charged after the jury deliberated for less than three hours because he obstinately refused to comply with a summons from the House select council looking into January 6, 2021, the uprising at the U.S. Statehouse by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. The summons was issued last September.
When he is sentenced on October 21, he will have a minimum punishment of 30 days in jail and a maximum of one year. Additionally, he could be subject to a fine ranging from $100 to $100,000.
In her closing remarks, prosecutor Molly Gaston told the jury that Bannon “chose allegiance to Donald Trump over compliance with the law.”
What Happened To Steve Bannon?
Stephen Kevin Bannon, also known as Steve Bannon, is an American political expert, media mogul, and producer. He was Donald Trump’s chief strategist and senior counselor in the White House from 2017 to 2018.
He received punishment for refusing to confirm and hand over records to the House Board of Trustees looking into the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
The Justice Department had been charged Bannon with two counts of contempt of Congress last year after he refused to answer a summons from the House board. A jury in a government court in Washington deliberated for less than three hours before deciding that Bannon was guilty on both counts. The advisory committee searched for his declaration related to his interactions with Donald Trump as Trump worked to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.
Where Is Steve Bannon Now?
In this regard, Bannon initially refused to confirm or provide documents to the panel, citing his position as a former official guide and Trump’s cases of primary honor. However, the veracity of Bannon’s assertion was called into question due to, among other claims, the fact that he had left Trump’s traditional White House team well before the attack.
The Justice Department charged Bannon with two counts of criminal hatred of Congress in November 2021 due to his refusal to comply with the parliamentary subpoena. These violations carried a maximum punishment of a $200,000 fine and two years in jail.
Around seven days before his scheduled preliminary, on July 10, 2022, Bannon told the House advisory group that he was prepared to appear before it and revealed that Trump had delivered him to affirm. Despite this, Bannon was charged with both counts of slander less than fourteen days after the incident.
