Former England captain Charlotte Edwards said she is not likely to apply for the position of head coach of the team’s women.
In addition to coaching Sydney Sixers in the Women’s Big Bash League, Southern Vipers in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, and Southern Brave in the Hundred, Edwards served as England’s captain for ten years until 2016.
As Lisa Keightley prepares to step down as head coach following the current series against India, she was thought to be the favorite to succeed.
However, Edwards has stated that she may not be ready for the England position yet and that before applying for a job in international cricket, she wants to coach in the Big Bash to further her career.
The 42-year-old Edwards joined the Sydney Sixers only this year and hasn’t yet presided over a game there. If she didn’t get the England position, she would also be a strong candidate to coach in the upcoming Women’s Indian Premier League.

Edwards, who retired from all forms of cricket in September 2017 and from international cricket in May 2016, respectively, made her debut as England’s then-youngest cricketer and broke the global scoring record before turning 18 years old, among many other firsts over a 20-year international career.
Since 2005, she has led the England team to victories in the Ashes series and world championships in the one-day and Twenty20 game formats.
After retiring from playing, she was appointed Hampshire’s Director of Women’s Cricket in 2018.
In 2020, she returned to her old squad, the Southern Vipers, as their head coach and guided them to the first two Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy victories.
Additionally, she mentors Southern Brave in The Hundred. The Charlotte Edwards Cup, a brand-new domestic women’s Twenty20 tournament in England, was named in 2021 in honor of her contributions to English cricket.
