Saxophonist, bandleader, and session musician Floyd Newman lived from August 17, 1931, until May 23, 2023. He had a long history with Stax Records as a baritone saxophonist who also played with the Memphis Horns and The Mar-Keys.
His membership in the B.B. King Review, which also included George Coleman and George Joyner, began in the late 1940s. He was born in Memphis. After relocating to Detroit, Newman worked with Jackie Brenston on recordings and then went on tour with Sam Cooke before returning to Memphis. Additionally, Newman played in a band at the Plantation Inn that included Howard Grimes on drums, Joe Woods on guitar, and Isaac Hayes on keyboards. The 45 “Frog Stomp,” written by Newman and Hayes with this lineup, was also recorded.
Floyd Newman cause of death
After spending some time in hospice, Newman, a baritone saxophone and significant contributor to the growth of Stax Records, passed away early on Tuesday morning. He was 91 years old. In a statement published on social media, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music confirmed the information: “Rest in power to our dear Mr. Floyd Newman, an all-star on the baritone sax and as a human being.”
Newman was still an influential musician in his later years. He collaborated with Memphis R&B revivalists The Bo-Keys during performances and recordings for their 2011 album “Got to Get Back.”
