Untold Johnny Manziel Documentary Release
Johnny Manziel documentary release date is set for August 8, 3:00 AM ET Thursday. The film is directed by Ryan Duffy who did work in 2022 ‘Untold’.
Duffy believes that the documentary will offer ‘a compelling and honest look at his present tense processing’. Ryan explains, “I hope viewers take away a nuanced and intimate understanding of Johnny and the running tension between his life as Johnny Football and Johnny Manziel.”
Manziel was a quarterback for Texas A&M who played his first season with the team in 2012 against the Alabama team and earned a major win. His outstanding performance led him to become a star college athlete. Johnny also got the title ‘Johnny Football’.
The part of Netflix ‘Untold’ docuseries tells the story of the meteoric rise of his college stardom, money, and the problems, the controversies that followed, and how he became the first-round pick for the Cleveland Browns, all in his own words.
Several of his acts against the rules got him suspended from the game including never-ending parties, and doing things to earn money against NCAA rules.
His own father Paul Manziel referred to him as a druggie in an interview with ESPN in 2016 saying, “It’s not a secret that he’s a druggie. Hopefully, he doesn’t die before he comes to his senses. I mean, I hate to say it, but I hope he goes to jail.
He further elaborated, “I mean, that would be the best place for him. I’m doing my job, and I’m going to move on. If I have to bury him, I’ll bury him.”
After spending time in rehab he was released from the Browns that year. Manziel shares it all in the episode. He talks about his journey, his feelings, ups and downs, heartbreaks, and more.
He doesn’t claim he had a happy ending but put forwards what it was back then trying a little to give a neutral perspective of what he has been left with now.
As Duffy said to Netflix, “This isn’t one of those sports docs on an older player looking back on victory or defeat and reflecting accordingly in a tidy ending.”
