Montanez is best known as the inventor of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos produced by Frito-Lay. He started working at the Rancho Cucamonga factory of Frito-Lay as a janitor in 1976 and was soon promoted to machine operator the following year in 1977.
One day Richard took home a bag of unseasoned Cheetos and experimented with different Mexican-spicy flavors, seeing his kids delighted with the new taste he pitched the idea to the then-CEO of Frito-Lay who greenlit the new spicy flavor immediately. Richard’s career took off at Frito-Lay as he was soon in an executive position.
The seemingly perfect rags-to-riches has a small flaw, according to Los Angeles Times Montanez never invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Frito-Lay’s internal investigation and inconsistency in Montanez’s story seemingly confirm the fact, adds the news outlet.
Richard expertly sells his charismatic storytelling and has written two books titled A Boy, a Burrito, and a Cookie and Flamin’ Hot: The Incredible True Story of One Man’s Rise from Janitor to Top Executive.
The latter book has been adapted into Richard’s biopic titled Flamin’ Hot which was released on Hulu and Disney Plus. Here is a list of family films on Disney Plus if you are interested in binge-watching this weekend.
