Nate Mendel’s Life and Career

Mendel was born in Richland, an intermediate town in southeastern Washington, on December 2, 1968. His first musical instrument was a violin.

At the age of 13, Mendel became interested in punk rock and joined a band after a friend who played guitar recommended him to play bass.

Even though the bassist of a local band gave him some tips, Mendel learned himself how to play the instrument.

Instead of achieving basic knowledge, he attempted to hit chords as quickly as possible.

Mendel started his career in the music industry with the thrash band Diddly Squat, which released just one 7″ single but traveled the country throughout the summertime of 1988.

After Diddly Squat went away, Mendel traveled to Seattle and spent four months with the hard-rock band Brotherhood.

Mendel and his fellow flat mate at the University of Washington, Dan Hoerner, started the band and named “Sunny Day Real Estate” in 1992.

Mendel along with his mate appointed drummer William Goldsmith to accompany them.

Throughout Mendel’s European tour with Christ on a Crutch, Jeremy Enigk collaborated with the other musicians and subsequently joined Sunny Day Real Estate full-time.

Before Sunny Day Real Estate broke in 1995, Mendel and Goldsmith entered the Foo Fighters throughout Halloween week in 1994.

Since then, he’s become one of the Foo Fighters’ exclusive core members, together with Grohl and Pat Smear.

Despite Sunny Day Real Estate being reassembled for two additional recordings (How It Feels to Be Something On and The Rising Tide), he continued with the Foo Fighters.

In 2001, Mendel collaborated with Juno. He appears as the best friend’s boyfriend and bassist in the indie film Our Burden Is Light.

Sunny Day Real Estate united in June 2009 with Mendel. The band toured in 2009, announcing the new album.

Recording sessions remained unsuccessful, and by 2013, the band had split up permanently.

Sunny Day Real State History

Sunny Day Real Estate is a Seattle-based American emo band. Even though they weren’t from the Midwest, they were some of the first rock musicians there and helped make the genres.

In 1992, Dan Hoerner, a guitarist, and Nate Mendel, a bassist, met when they shifted to the same apartment at the University of Washington.

After a few rehearsals, they wanted to form a pop band and looked for a drummer. They ended up choosing William Goldsmith in that moment.

The band separated apart after LP2. Nate Mendel (bass) and William Goldsmith (drums) decided to join the Foo Fighters.

Jeremy Enigk departed solo. In 1997, they reunited to produce two unreleased tracks and a concert film until the end of 2001.

The band regrouped in 2009. Nate Mendel decided to stay with the Foo Fighters.

In 2009, the band released two new original tracks. Mendel claimed Sunny Day Real Estate was unreliable in 2013.
