Two days before he passed away at the age of 88, beloved Catholic priest Father Bob Maguire complained of “treachery” and that the charity he created had fired him.
He had only last week told friends, family, and fans that “everything’s alright with me,” but his family has announced that the self-described larrikin, Melbourne legend, and former triple j radio personality passed suddenly on Wednesday at Melbourne’s Cabrini hospital.
Father Bob had recently begun residing in a retirement community to receive round-the-clock respite care.
His family stated today that he has been declining physically and psychologically for some years.
Fr. Bob, who devoted his life to serving the Catholic church and doing good deeds, had a reputation as a blunt commentator who wasn’t hesitant to criticize church authorities, especially on his radio program with John Safran.
