In 1934, Maguire was born. From 1940 until 1947, Maguire attended Armadale’s Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary School.
When he was eight years old, he joined the altar boys. When he was 11 years old, his sister Kathleen passed away from TB.
From 1948 to 1953, Maguire attended Christian Brothers College in St. Kilda on a scholarship provided by the RSL.
The year he began attending school there, his father passed away from lung cancer. In 1950, at the age of 61, his mother passed away, leaving Maguire an orphan.
Maguire was the fourth and youngest kid. When “he’d been away and when he came home, he beat me with his belt,” was the only time he could recall his father paying him any attention.
Eileen was his oldest sibling, followed by Kathleen and James (Jim), the youngest sibling who was eight years older than he was.
