Fabio Cannavaro Parma

In the summer of 1995, Cannavaro was sold to Parma and he became a regular in the first team in his first season. He had 29 appearances in the league and scored once. He also went on to win trophies with the club as well as achieve several personal accomplishments, such as being named the team’s captain. It was also in Parma that he met Gianluigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram, who would not only form one of the tightest defensive units of Europe with Cannavaro, but would also become some of his closest friends in football.

It was at Parma that he began to obtain success. However, Parma were eliminated in the second round of the Coppa Italia during Cannavaro’s  first season, but they also finished in sixth place in Serie A that season, qualifying for the UEFA Cup. The club also reached the quarter-finals of the 1995–96 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup that season. Parma finished the 1996–97 Serie A season as runners-up to Serie A champions Juventus, allowing them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League the following season.

During his fourth season with the club, Cannavaro won his only European trophy, the UEFA Cup, as well as winning the Coppa Italia. They finished the Serie A season in fourth place, one point from Fiorentina in the third place spot.

His brother, Paolo Cannavaro, joined the team the following season and the two brothers were able to play alongside each other for the next two seasons. His first Supercoppa Italiana title he won against Serie A champions Milan and Parma finished the Serie A season in fourth place, tied with Internazionale for the final remaining Champions League spot. They failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage as they lost 3–1 to Inter in the Serie A Champions League playoff match. They began in the third and final qualifying round of the Champions League and were eliminated by Rangers. They were however knocked out in the round of 16 of both the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia that season.

Cannavaro aided in leading Parma to another Coppa Italia Final in the 2000–01 season, in which they were defeated by Fiorentina. In the same season, they were eliminated in the third round of the UEFA Cup. Parma also finished the season in fourth place for the third consecutive season, which allowed them to go through to the Champions League qualifying round, although Parma were ultimately unable to qualify.

He also managed to win his second Coppa Italia title, over Juventus, whilst Parma were eliminated in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup, and finished the Serie A season in tenth place in his final season. He began  to earn call-ups to the national team’s senior squad due to his performances for Parma as from 1997. He made over 250 appearances in all competitions for Parma and scored five goals.

Fabio Cannavaro Real Madrid

Cannavaro was signed by Real Madrid for a fee of €7 million. He was given the number 5 shirt which had previously been worn by former Madrid player and French international Zinedine Zidane. At Madrid, he spent three seasons and won the Liga title in 2006–07 and 2007–08, was named the 2006 FIFA World Player of the Year and also won the 2006 Ballon d’Or. He was also elected as part of the 2006 and the 2007 FIFPro World XI squads, and the 2006 UEFA Team of the Year. In 2007, Cannavaro was named in the six man shortlist for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year.

His decline began to be evident during his final seasons in Madrid, especially during the 2008–09 season. He was often seen struggling when faced with pacy opponents such as Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres due to his advanced age, leading to Real Madrid conceding any number of goals. It was confirmed that he would return to Juventus for the 2009–10 season at the conclusion of his contract. Following this 19th May 2009 announcement, he received a standing ovation from the fans on his final match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. In April 2013, Cannavaro was named by Marca as a member of the “Best foreign eleven in Real Madrid’s history”.

Guanghzou Evergrande manager Fabio Cannavaro will attempt to sign ‘new faces’ after relinquishing CSL title to Shanghai SIPG

Adopted from: firstpost.com

Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro said he wants to sign “a few new faces” after Guangzhou Evergrande’s seven-year reign as Chinese Super League (CSL) champions came crashing to a halt.

The former world player of the year’s side thrashed Tianjin Teda 5-1 on the final day of the season on Sunday to make it 82 goals for the campaign — a CSL record. But they had already surrendered their league crown to Shanghai SIPG, who sealed their first CSL triumph last Wednesday.

Evergrande finished second, five points behind SIPG, and Cannavaro will be under pressure from the start of next season to regain the title. The 45-year-old former defender, who took over this season from the Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari, said: “Our boss will definitely not be happy about the loss (of the title).”

“I want to talk to him. I still hope to bring a few new faces in and let the passion return to the team,” Chinese media quoted him as saying.

Saddled with an ageing squad and poor recruitment during the close season, Evergrande made a slow start to their title defence, putting Cannavaro under the cosh from the off. But when the season took a break for the World Cup in June-July, Evergrande re-signed Brazilian international midfielder Paulinho from Barcelona, initially on loan.

They also sealed a loan move for another Brazilian, the attacking midfielder Anderson Talisca, from Benfica. The 24-year-old made a spectacular impact, hitting 16 goals in 18 league games, and his move was made permanent, even though Evergrande had previously pledged to field an all-Chinese team by 2020.

Evergrande belatedly emerged as the main threat to SIPG, who boast the expensive Brazilians Hulk and Oscar, but lost 5-4 at home to the Shanghai side earlier this month in what was effectively the title-decider.

“For the first time the team didn’t win the championship (in eight years), and it’s with me (as coach),” said a rueful Cannavaro, who captained Italy to World Cup glory in 2006. “To be honest, it is not very easy to take over a team from two top coaches,” he added, referring to Scolari and the Italian Marcello Lippi, now coach of China.

Cannavaro had an ill-fated seven-month spell in charge of Evergrande in 2014-2015 and there were suggestions prior to the World Cup break that he could get the chop again. But his position appears safe for now following Evergrande’s vast improvement in the second half of the season.

There is also some leeway because Cannavaro is working with an ageing squad. The average age of Evergrande’s starting XI in the crunch game against SIPG was nearly 31, while the Shanghai team’s was nearer 27.

Monday’s influential Guangzhou Daily said that the “dream” of an eighth CSL crown had been “shattered”. But in a sympathetic appraisal, the newspaper added that this was “a result that most people can expect”.
