Amber Heard and Johnny Deep Defamation Trail
Johnny Deep and Amber Heard is an ongoing defamation trial in Fairfax County, Virginia, that began on April 11, 2022.
Johnny, 58, sued his ex-wife for $50 million for an article she wrote in which she claims to be an abuse victim. Amber, 36, counter-sued for $100 million.
The parties are film actors who are married from 2015 to 2017. Previously accused by Amber of intimate partner violence, Johnny sued his ex-wife in February 2019 over an op-ed she wrote which was published by The Washington Post in December 2018.
Johnny blamed Amber’s op-ed for extensive financial losses to his career and claimed it damaged his ability to profit from his vocation. In the op-ed, Amber had described becoming a “public figure representing domestic abuse” and “seeing, real-time, how institutions protect men accused of abuse.”
Johnny’s lawyer asked jurors to “hold Amber accountable for the lies.” whereas Amber’s team, in turn, said it was Johnny who is a bully and abuser, not to be trusted. The jury of seven must come to a unanimous decision for a verdict. They began their deliberations shortly after both sides delivered their closing arguments.
The judge said, “the case is not about who’s a better spouse. It’s about whether you think Ms. Amber may have been abusive to Mr. Johnny. If you think they were both abusive to each other then Amber wins. If Amber was abused even one time, then she wins.”
