There is probably no other person in the National Hockey League (NHL) who can go as long as 12 minutes and still have enough time to earn the game’s first star like Dustin Byfuglien did in one of his many standout games . The Winnipeg Jets assistant captain, who plays primarily as a defender but has also been a forward, has been dubbed the most menacing player on the ice. He is also known for his talent which makes him a rare breed in the sport.
Early Life and Education
On March 27, 1985 in MinneapolisMinnesota, Dustin Byfuglien was welcomed into the world by his Caucasian mother, Cheryl Byfuglien, and African American father, Rick Spencer, who were never married. When he was young, Cheryl moved back to Roseau from Minneapolis to be close to her family while Rick stayed behind to continue his schooling. Cheryl Byfuglien later married hockey player Dale Smedsmo, who helped shape her son’s career choices by making him fall in love with the sport.
Byfuglien attended Roseau High School, but due to his poor grades, he is not eligible to play the sport under Minnesota State High School League rules. This prompted him to leave the state, and he relocated to a suburb of Chicago called Warrenville, Illinois, where he played under-18 amateur ice hockey for the Chicago Mission. Byfuglien later moved to Canada to play first major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) – the Brandon Wheat Kings and then the Prince George Cougars before joining the National Hockey League.
National Hockey League career
Dustin Byfuglien’s National Hockey League career began with the Chicago Blackhawks, who drafted him in 2003 with a 245th overall pick. He spent most of his early seasons with the Blackhawks minor league members, the Norfolk Admirals and the Rockford IceHogs, both of which are affiliated with the American Hockey League (AHL). However, during his time with the IceHogs, Byfuglien developed into a sensational player and received the American Hockey League’s Player of the Week award, becoming the first player on the team to receive the award.
After a string of sensational displays, Byfuglien was permanently called back to his parent team in the 2007–08 season. He marked his return to the big leagues with a goal against the St. Louis Blues before scoring his first hat-trick against the Phoenix Coyotes a few weeks later. By the 2009-10 season, Dustin Byfuglien had become a mainstay for his team and played a key role in the successful awarding of a Stanley Cup. He contributed 5 assists and 11 goals in the playoffs, three of which came in the finals.
The following 2011–12 season the Atlanta Thrashers franchise moved to Winnipeg and changed its name to Jets. The move didn’t seem to affect Byfuglien’s game as he has made 66 appearances for the Jets this season, recording 12 goals and 41 assists. He’s been a mainstay with the team ever since, extending his spell by signing a new five-year, $38m deal that expires in the 2020-21 season.
