Following his stellar performance against Lorenzi in 2016, Paul spent the rest of the year competing on the ATP challenger circuit and the International Tennis Federation circuit. Paul continued competing in Challengers and ITFs in the first half of 2017 and went on to qualify for the Atlanta Open in July 2017, where he defeated the seventh seed and the world’s 53rd-ranked South Korean player Chung Hyeon in three sets.
He also defeated Tunisian player Malek Jaziri in three sets and advanced to his first ATP tour-level quarterfinal, where he was unceremoniously defeated by third seed Gilles Muller. However, his performance was good enough that he was awarded a wildcard entry into the ATP 500 Washinton Open, where he defeated Norwegian Casper Rudd and French Lucas Pouille, the latter of which was the most prominent win of his career at that point.
He faced Gilles Muller again after Pouille and defeated him but lost to Japanese Kei Nishikori. Paul finally broke into the top 100 in September 2019, after winning the Sarasota Open – Singles and then his second ATP challenger in New Haven.

Tommy Paul has not talked to the public and media about his religious beliefs or if he has any.
Paul has been too busy growing his career in Tennis to share who he is as a person with the media, but one can make the argument that it’s his performance that truly matters. Since he broke into the Top 100 in 2019, Paul has been grinding and trying to rise higher and higher.
The young player reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2020 Australian Open when he defeated the 18th seed, the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, but then lost to Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.
A year later, Paul’s grinding would pay off when he was chosen to represent the country of the United States at the Summer Olympics 2020, where he, unfortunately, lost to the 11th seed, Russian Aslna Karatsev, in the first round. Still, Paul was never one to let his losses break him down, and just recently, at the 2022 BNP Paribas Open, he earned the biggest win of his career when he defeated world number 3. Alexander Zverev in the second round.
