Nichelle Nichols was born in Robbins, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, to parents Lishia and Samuel Nichols. She began her career as a singer and dancer before transitioning to acting and being famous for her role as Lt. Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek (1966) series.
Although no one else in her family pursued any of those fields, save for her father, who could tap dance, she had always desired to sing, dance, act, and write. He was elected both mayor and magistrate of their town, Robbins, Illinois.
With Sammy Davis, Jr. in Porgy and Bess and James Garner in Mister Budwing, Nichelle was nominated twice for the Sarah Siddons Award for Best Actress of the Year on stage (1965). She portrayed a blousey madam before recasting as a co-star with Lynn Redgrave in Antony and Cleopatra shortly after the Star Trek television series ended.
Although Nichols sang and appeared in musicals in the early 1960s, it was her role as Uhura, the communications officer on the USS Enterprise, that finally made her famous.
In actuality, Uhura was a valued, equal member of the Star Trek team and was one of the first Black characters on American television who wasn’t playing a vulnerable situation.
This Saturday, she passed away from heart failure. The trailblazing artist, who inspired countless people via both her advocacy and her acting, is being honored by fans, friends, coworkers, and admirers. She was 89.
