When Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly separated, he experienced “heartbreak” for the first time.
The 45-year-old actor was romantically involved with his 43-year-old “Lost” co-star Evangeline from 2003 to 2007, and he described their breakup as the first and only time he had ever experienced heartbreak.
The “Lord of the Rings” actor continued by explaining that he turned to drink due to his breakup with Evangeline because he spent his formative years in England. He also said that he was “beyond distraught” to learn that Evangeline was dating someone else from a third party.
The Chuck actor later admitted in the podcast episode that he and the Ant-Man actress broke up after discovering she started dating someone else.
The West Berlin native said that despite the heartache, he still appreciated his connection with Lilly.

Evangeline Lilly Cheated On Dominic Monaghan
In one of his interviews, Dominic Monaghan spoke openly about his previous union with Evangeline Lilly. It appears that the split was the only one that broke his heart. The Lord of the Rings star discusses his breakup with the Antman actress for the first time.
The actor discussed his divorce in a talk with Anna Farris on her podcast, “Unqualified.” I’ve only really had my heart broken once in my life, he admits.
He mentioned dating Evangeline while working on the Lost set when talking about his previous relationship. Who you know has gone on to have a name all of her own, he continues. He continues by saying he is unsure how she would explain their romantic history.
But from his perspective, he was probably “all in” for the first time. He was a highly dedicated actor in Lost, according to Monaghan. But his enormous drinking problem caused the pair to break up.
Additionally, he notes that he used to drink a lot and constantly desired more as a man. He once believed that Evangeline was okay with it. Nevertheless, even though he thought drinking to be expected, he still had “a lot of maturing to do in terms of what was normal and what wasn’t.”
He thought she was considering the idea that, while temporarily okay, he wouldn’t be a great husband or father because of all the work he had to do, which I indeed did.
