He guided the US team to the gold medal at the 2017 FIBA AmeriCup. During his coaching time, he had also worked as a guest analyst for ESPN broadcast.

Due to health concerns, ESPN has revelead that Van will miss the Game 1 of the NBA finals. He is not the only one unable to come to the game as Adrian Wojnarowski has also been reported of having COVID-19.
