John Eric Bartholomew, OBE (14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984), better known by his stage name Eric Morecambe, was an English comedian who, with Ernie Wise, founded the award-winning comedy duo Morecambe and Wise, which won many awards. The collaboration lasted from 1941 until Morecambe’s death in 1984, when it was officially ended. Morecambe got his stage name from his hometown of Morecambe, which is a coastal village on the north coast of England. The Morecambe & Wise Show, in which he appeared as a co-star, received more than twenty-eight million viewers in the United Kingdom during some of the show’s Christmas episodes. In a survey conducted by the BBC in 2002, he was voted one of the 100 Greatest Britons of all time.
