Emilie Autumn Liddell (born September 22, 1979), better known by her stage name Emilie Autumn, is an American singer-songwriter, poet, and violinist who is best known for her songs on love and loss. Autumn draws inspiration for her music, which she has variously labelled as “Fairy Pop,” “Fantasy Rock,” “Victoriandustrial,” and glam rock, from plays, novels, and history, particularly the Victorian era. Autumn’s music has been described as “Fairy Pop,” “Fantasy Rock,” “Victoriandustrial,” and glam rock. Autumn combines classical music, cabaret, electronica, glam rock, and burlesque with elements of theatrics and burlesque in her performances with her all-female backing dancers, The Bloody Crumpets. Born in Malibu, California, she began learning the violin at the age of four and graduated from high school five years later with the goal of becoming a world-class violinist. She practised eight or nine hours a day and devoured a wide range of literary works as part of her preparation for the violin. As she progressed to composing her own music, she trained under a variety of instructors and attended Indiana University, where she eventually dropped out due to disagreements about the connection between classical music and the physical appearance of the performer. Autumn made her professional debut with the publication of her classical album On a Day: Music for Violin and Continuo in 2001, which was followed by the release of her album Enchant in 2003, which was released via her own independent label Traitor Records. She performed as a member of singer Courtney Love’s backup band on her 2004 America’s Sweetheart tour and later toured Europe with the singer. Opheliac, her first studio album, was released in 2006 via the German label Trisol Music Group. Laced/Unlaced was released in 2007; the re-release of On a Day… was issued as Laced, while tracks performed on the electric violin were published as Unlaced. She subsequently left Trisol to join New York-based The End Records in 2009, where she was responsible for bringing Opheliac to the United States, where it had previously only been accessible as an import. She is now on tour to promote her most recent studio album, Fight Like A Girl. In the 2012 film The Devil’s Carnival, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, she portrayed the part of Painted Doll.
