Joel Sandé, a Zambian, and Diane Sandé-Wood, an Englishwoman, welcomed Adele Emily Sandé into the world on March 10, 1987, in Sunderland. Her mother and father met while attending the polytechnic in Sunderland. Her father had immigrated from Zambia. Sandé’s family moved to Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland when she was four years old.

At a young age, Sandé discovered a passion for music, and at the age of 11, for a primary school talent competition, she wrote her first song. When she realized her talent as a songwriter, this experience was a turning point for her. She had always wanted to play music and write songs since she liked musicians and songwriters.

Sandé was adamant that she could never sing other people’s music. She wrote her debut song, “Tomorrow Starts Again,” which displayed her command of song structure and even had a middle eight.

Sandé was well-liked and regarded for her diligence while attending Alford Academy, her father’s place of employment. She disliked missing school because of illness and had a tremendous desire to learn.

Throughout high school, she came to identify herself primarily as Mr. Sandé’s daughter. She was aware that she needed to behave well and avoid misbehavior because any transgressions would be swiftly reported to her father. Her discipline and focus were maintained by her father’s strictness.
