Ellen began acting as early as in 1976. She is well known for her role as Louisa Arcola Delvecchio, the aunt of Fonzie (Henry Winkler) and mother of Chachi Arcola (Scott Baio) in the sitcom Happy Days which is based in the 1950s. She reprised her role in the movie’s spin-off Joanie Loves Chachi (1982-1983). From 1987-1990, she played the role of the mother of Baio’s character on the syndicated comedy series Charles in Charge. Previously, she had portrayed Jimmy Baio’s mother on an episode of the television series The Love Boat in 1978.
On Welcome Back, Kotter, Ellen played the role of Mrs. Horshack-O’Hara in three of the sitcom’s episodes. Her youngest brother, John Travolta also appears in the series on a starring role as Vinnie Barbarino. In the 70s, she landed the role of Dorothy Manucci in the short-lived television series Makin’ It and as Marion Keisker in the television film Elvis (1979), a John Carpenter production.
Ellen’s mother, Helen Travolta was a drama coach and actress who loved the theatre. She encouraged her children to join the theatre and as such, Ellen became a supporter of the Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre as well as a longtime performer in the theatre. In 2000, she appeared in a production of Hello, Dolly! in the theatre and in 2012, she played the starring role opposite her husband’s portrayal of Horace Vandergelder.
The Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre is a beneficiary of the Helen Burke Travolta Memorial fund which was established in honor of the Travoltas’ mother.
