Edward Burns is an American actor and filmmaker.
Burns rose to prominence through his 1995 ultra-low-budget independent film The Brothers McMullen.
His other film credits include Saving Private Ryan (1998), Life or Something Like It (2002), Confidence (2003), Man on a Ledge (2012), Blue Bloods (2010–2023), Beneath the Blue Suburban Skies (2019), Bridge And Tunnel (2021-2022), and many others.

Edward J. Burns is the father of Edward Burns.
He was born in 1937 at New York Hospital on Manhattan’s Upper East Side to John Burns and Josephine Marie Burns.
Burns attended Catholic schools in Manhattan from grammar school to high school.
Burns reportedly entered the police academy in June 1966. While serving as an officer, he attended Saint John’s University for a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and New York University for a Master’s degree in Media Ecology.
As a sergeant with the NYPD, he started working at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information (DCPI) where he was the spokesperson of the NYPD. He subsequently became an adjunct professor at NYU in Media Ecology.
Burns spent 27 years working for the NYPD before retiring.
Following his retirement, Burns opened two public relations firms.
He was married to Molly McKenna for over 6 decades and they had three children; Mary Burns, Edward Burns and Brian Burns.

Molly McKenna was the mother of Edward Burns.
She was born on November 7, 1936 in the Bronx, New York to Michael and Catherine McKenna.
Molly graduated from St. Angelia Merici Elementary School on Morris Avenue in the Bronx and St. Vincent Ferrer High School, Manhattan, in 1955. She then graduated from Molly College and was a certified paralegal.
Molly worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at Kennedy Airport, retiring in 2001.
She married Edward J. Burns in 1960 in St. Angelia’s and they had three children.
Molly McKenna died on May 26, 2020, in Jupiter, Florida.
