Eduard Hugo de Waal is in 1955 te Eldoret in Kenia gebore. Sy voorouers vestig hulle in 1909 in Kenia kort na die verwoesting van die Anglo-Boereoorlog in Suid-Afrika op soek na ’n beter lewe vir hulle nageslag, maar die familie keer terug na Suid-Afrika nadat onafhanklikheid aan Kenia toegestaan word in die sestigerjare. In 1972 voltooi hy sy matriek aan die Hoërskool Eshowe in Natal. Op skool is hy aktief in drama en speel onder andere ’n hoofrol in die skool se opvoering van “Dienie speel toneel”. Hy studeer verder aan die Universiteit van Pretoria, waar hy in 1977 die B.A.-graad en later ook die B.A. Honneurs-graad en die Hoër Onderwysdiploma verwerf. Hierna studeer hy verder in die Teologie en behaal in 1999 sy M.D.-graad in die Nuwe Testament.
