Earnie Shavers (born August 31, 1945) is a former professional boxer from the United States of America. The greatest puncher in boxing history, Shavers is regarded by most boxing historians to be the greatest of all time, having scored 68 knockouts in 74 victories. His most well-known bouts were against Muhammad Ali in 1977 and Larry Holmes in 1979, both for the world championship. He was able to severely injure Ali in round two of their fight, and he was able to score a major knockdown over Holmes in round seven of their rematch the following year. Shavers is most well-known for defeating many great competitors, including Jimmy Ellis, Ken Norton, and Joe Bugner, among others. In his professional boxing career, he competed in 367 rounds and won 76.4 percent of his fights via knockout. Shavers announced his retirement from boxing in 1995. His autobiography, “Welcome to the Big Time,” was published after he retired from professional baseball. He now lives in the city of Warren in the state of Ohio, United States.
