Drake Maye is an American football quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Maye attended Myers Park High School, where he was named MaxPreps North Carolina player of the year. He was a four-star prospect and originally committed to Alabama before flipping to North Carolina.
He played little in 2021 as he redshirted, appearing in four games. When starter Sam Howell was out of action due to injury in the Wofford game, Maye saw the most extended action of his career to that point.
Splitting halves with Howell’s other backup, number 2 QB Jacolby Criswell, Maye completed 7 of his 9 pass attempts for 89 yards and a touchdown. He also registered four carries for 38 yards.
Maye and Criswell battled for the starting position after Howell’s departure, but Maye was ultimately named the starter on August 22nd, 2022, just five days before the season opener.
In Week 0 against Florida A&M, his first career start, Maye completed 29/37 pass attempts for 294 yards and 5 touchdowns and rushed four times for 55 yards, a season-high for yards per carrying. In Week 2, on the road against in-state foe App State, Maye threw for 352 yards and four touchdowns and added a season-high 76 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
