Former Nigerian singer, Sidney Onoriode Esiri, widely known as Dr Sid, has shed light on his decision to exit the music industry and embark on a journey into film production after parting ways with his previous record label.
In a revealing interview on a BTS podcast, Dr Sid candidly explained that his departure from the music scene was prompted by his dissatisfaction with the reception of his last music project. This led him to explore new horizons, particularly in the world of filmmaking.
Reflecting on his music career, Dr Sid acknowledged that he had achieved considerable success. He had earned awards, toured the globe, and released chart-topping hits. However, his most recent music endeavor did not meet his expectations, leading him to contemplate a significant career shift.
“I had pretty much lived my dream,” Dr Sid stated during the interview. “I had done every single thing I wanted to do in music, I had won awards, I had toured the world, I had hit records, and when I put out the last body of work that I did, it did not get the response that I was expecting.”
Driven by a desire for artistic evolution, Dr Sid decided to make a conscious decision to transition into the world of filmmaking, a passion he had long held. He recognized that music was just one chapter of his multifaceted career, and he was eager to explore new creative avenues.
In addition to his filmmaking pursuits, Dr Sid also revealed his passion for gaming and his ambition to contribute to Nigeria’s gaming ecosystem. After attending a gaming conference in the United States, he became aware of the enormous potential within the gaming industry, which generates more revenue than the music and film industries combined. Inspired by this revelation, he returned to Nigeria and established a company aimed at bolstering the Nigerian gaming ecosystem.
Dr Sid’s journey from music to filmmaking and gaming exemplifies the artist’s determination to continue evolving and exploring diverse creative avenues. While his music career may have taken a backseat, his passion for storytelling through film and his commitment to advancing the gaming industry in Africa remain at the forefront of his endeavors.
Dr Sid was previously associated with the renowned Mo’Hits Records, and in 2018, he openly discussed his efforts to preserve the label’s unity amid its split, a period of turmoil for the group. The label has since rebranded as Mavin Records, introducing new talents to the music scene.
