Monica Bharel, MD, MPH is an American Physician who currently serves as the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) a position she has held since 2015. As commissioner, she is in charge of the state’s aggressive response to the opioid crisis and is dedicated to reducing health disparities and developing data-driven, evidence-based solutions for keeping people healthy.
Prior to her appointment in 2015, she served as the Chief Medical Officer of Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program is the country’s largest non -profit health care organization for homeless individuals.
She was also a gubernatorial appointment to the Behavioral Health and Primary Care Integration Task Force under the Massachusetts health care payment reform initiative in the public center. She has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health and has served on the faculty of Boston University Medical School.
She has over 20 years of experience as a general internal medicine working city hospital, the Veterans Administration, neighborhood health centers and nonprofit organizations.
