Tragedy struck on a somber Sunday night when news broke that Douglas Kyle was involved in a single-vehicle rollover incident in Calgary’s southeast. Confirmed by his family to CTV News, the accident occurred at the intersection of 114 Avenue S.E. and 84 Street S.E., where a blue 2017 Chevrolet Spark, driven by Kyle, veered off the road.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the car was headed east on 114 Avenue, approaching 84 Street. As it reached a T-intersection, it tragically lost control and veered off the road, leading to the accident that would ultimately claim Kyle’s life.

Paramedics swiftly transported Kyle to a local hospital, citing his injuries as serious but not immediately life-threatening. However, the resilient Olympian’s fight came to an end as he later passed away while under medical care.

Calgary Police released a statement, assuring the public that the circumstances surrounding Kyle’s untimely death are under careful investigation: “At this time, police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the man’s death. Drugs or alcohol are not considered to be factors in this collision.”

His commitment to the sport extended beyond his athletic career, evident in his founding of the Calgary Marathon in 1963, an event that remains a testament to his dedication and vision.

Jon Bird, interim executive director with Run Calgary, shared sentiments of loss: “What Doug has done is leave us a legacy for how to be involved in the community and how to be a leader within the community and how to shape a community.” Bird’s words capture the essence of Doug Kyle’s enduring influence on the running community and the city he called home.
