Hydro bills going up despite Ford election promise
From https://torontosun.com/
Premier Doug Ford promised to lower people’s hydro bills, but they’re headed in the other direction.
Ontarians will see their average hydro bill go up by about $1.99 a month — which works out to almost $24 a year – starting Nov. 1.
New higher time-of-use electricity prices were unveiled Tuesday by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB.)
The Ford government issued a news release Tuesday trumpeting a new “transparent” hydro bill that makes it clear what the “true cost” of electricity is and to what degree the taxpayers subsidize that amount.
The previous government embedded its Fair Hydro Plan rebate in the electricity price.
“People deserve facts and accountability, especially when it comes to hydro costs,” Energy Minister Greg Rickford said in a statement.
Earlier this year, Rickford said hydro increases would be held to the rate of inflation, but the Ford government campaigned in 2018 on a pledge to lower hydro bills by 12%.
Customers will pay peak prices for their electricity between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. also 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays.
The price of peak power will be 20.8 cents/kWh — up from 13.4 cents/kWh — a startling jump because the government’s electricity rebate will now be reflected on another part of the bill.
Mid-peak power, which is charged between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays, rises to 14.4 cents/kWh from 9.4 cents kWh, while electricity prices for weekends, holidays and overnights climbs to 10.1 cents/kWH from 6.5 cents/kWh.
The overall impact on the average hydro customer is another $1.99 a month or 1.8%, the rate of inflation, the OEB says.
An average consumer is defined as someone who uses 700 kWh a month, 64% of it in off-peak hours, and 18% each in mid-peak and on-peak.
Doug Ford University Funding | Doug Ford Class Size
After Ford was sworn in, by the end of June 2019, he had reduced funding for school programs such as after-school jobs for the youth living in low-income neighbourhoods. He also removed tutors in classrooms, daily physical activity for elementary students, financial assistance for college and university students and free tuition for low-income students. In response, he increased class sizes and canceled three summer curriculum-writing sessions (one among the three was ran by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission).

Five Ways Doug Ford Has Worked Against Public Education
From https://pressprogress.ca/
1. Cutting per-pupil education funding (and lying about it)
Despite Minister Lecce’s claim that the government is spending more on education than any government previously, calculations show the government’s education spending per-pupil for 2019-20 is $54 lower than in 2018-19.
Further, the Financial Accountability Office noted while from 2013-18 education’s core “cost-drivers” rose 2.2% annually against 3.3% annual spending increases — the Ford government projects to slow spending increases to 1% annually, against 2.7% annual cost increases.
2. Planning to Axe 10,000 Teaching Jobs
According to Ontario’s Financial Accountability Office, the Ford government’s proposed changes to school staffing will, over five years, reduce the number of teachers employed in the province by 10,054.
3. Planning To Raise Elementary And Secondary Class Sizes
The Ford government also planned to increase average class sizes to 24.5 for grades 4-8 and to 28 for highschools.
The then-education remarked larger classes might be good for students “lacking resiliency.”
4. Touting Education “investments” While Cutting 6,000 Teaching Jobs
During negotiations, the government softened its class size increase proposal in highschools to only 25 students per class, without altering its target for elementary schools.
Researchers soon noted that would still remove about 6,000 teaching positions from Ontario’s schools, over several years.
But the government still tried promote its “investment” in education its 2019 Fall Fiscal Review.
4. Burying Results Of Parent Consultations On Class Size Increases
On Nov. 5, Lecce acknowledged the government spent “just shy” of $1 million consulting parents about its changes to the public education, including its planned class size increases.
But, when asked what response the government received, the minister declined to comment. Lecce said only that releasing the data could “directly impinge our negotiating position” at the bargaining table.
According to a recent poll, only 11 per cent of Ontarians support larger class sizes.
5. Shoring Up Private Education Interests
Private education companies have seen business opportunities in the Ford government’s public education overhaul.
For example, PressProgress reported, Blyth Education, a for-profit education company launched an advertising campaign to woo parents worried Ford’s cuts could cancel classes and harm students’ futures. And, Blyth isn’t alone.
Back in June, PwC circulated emails to school guidance counselors asking for advice on how students select courses. PwC told PressProgress the email was sent following Ford’s announcement that students would have to complete online classes, likely provided by private companies, to graduate.
Sources close to the Ford government’s parent consultations told media a majority of parents consulted opposed Ford’s online module mandate, as well.
Doug Ford Income Tax
He supported the denouncing of car registration tax, removal of the land transfer tax. He also supported keeping the property tax increase below the inflation rate.
Ford also vowed to reduce provincial taxes. He wanted to eliminate cap-and-trade, reduce middle-class income tax and the corporate income tax. He also proposed reduction of the small business and gasoline tax.
Doug Ford Memes
In 2018, it was reported that Toronto artists were gathering images for anti-Ford protests. The union took steps to align with labour unions, teachers, and also healthcare providers in Ontario.
They went on to create memes and share them via social media so as to create greater exposure for their project.

Ford will ‘own’ education cuts if province ends teacher strikes: Union
From https://torontosun.com/
The Doug Ford government is under increasing pressure to end teacher strikes at the same time new polling shows more parents siding with educators.
Members of all four teacher unions will continue to hit the bricks in rotating strikes that have created a patchwork schedule for students across Ontario.
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) is conducting a one-day, province-wide walkout Tuesday.
As reported by the Toronto Sun’s Brian Lilley, pollster John Wright, of DART, found that the government’s position is weakening as the job action drags on.
Even though a majority of those polled want the government to use its legislative hammer to force an end to the strikes, more people side with the teachers than the government. Teacher unions insist their members are fighting for students while the government argues the job action is all about compensation.
MPPs are scheduled to return to Ontario’s legislature next Tuesday, giving the government an opportunity to introduce a back-to-work bill.
Harvey Bischof, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, said teachers and education workers still believe there is a route to settle this dispute through negotiations.
While they’re aware that the government might legislate teachers back to work, it doesn’t make them more inclined to accept the government’s “destructive” proposals at the bargaining table, he said.
“If they legislate an end to job action, they’ll simply be ending my members’ ability to resist these destructive cuts to education,” Bischof said. “And, at which point, they will completely own all of the negative implications on our education system.”
Bischof said he believes parents are siding with teachers over issues like larger class sizes, student access to course options, supports for education workers and mandatory online learning
Education Minister Stephen Lecce has repeatedly said that the main focus of teacher unions is compensation, noting they’ve asked for more than the 1% annual cap on public sector wage and benefit increases.
“Teacher union leaders think raising taxes on working people for higher compensation and benefits is a good idea. We disagree,” Lecce tweeted Monday.
ETFO President Sam Hammond responded: “Seriously! Every day you have a different spin and it’s not resonating, not with parents, and not with our members!”
