American professional basketball player Donovan Mitchell Jr. (born September 7, 1996) plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was selected with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, earning the nickname “Spida”. He has played in four NBA All-Star games.
Mitchell represented the Louisville Cardinals in collegiate basketball, where he was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s (ACC) first team that year. He won the Slam Dunk Contest in 2018 and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team while a rookie with the Utah Jazz. In 2022, he was transferred from the Jazz to the Cavaliers.
Mitchell spent his first two years of high school at Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, after graduating from Greenwich Country Day School in the same state. Mitchell also played baseball for Canterbury in addition to basketball. However, Mitchell’s high school baseball career ended in his sophomore year due to injury; while rushing for a pop-up in the infield, he collided with a catcher, who suffered a broken jaw, while he received a broken wrist. It also meant the end of his upcoming AAU season.
His mother sent him to Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, for his junior and senior years. Mitchell attracted a lot more attention from college basketball coaches after focusing on basketball and taking advantage of Brewster’s nationally renowned program.
He quickly became popular among his new classmates, so much so that he ran for senior prefect at the end of his junior year. He also performed in the school musical and gave tours to visiting students as a member of the Gold Key Club. He won two prep school national championships with Brewster’s team. As he would later do in college, Mitchell spent his summers playing streetball games at the famed Rucker Park in New York City.
He performed a dunk that was featured on Sports Center at an Under Armour event on a Brooklyn basketball court. Mitchell was invited to play in the Jordan Brand Classic regional game after being ranked 27th in the 2015 class by one recruiting service and 43rd by another. He committed to playing college basketball at the University of Louisville.
