Flappy Bird is a 2013 smartphone game created by Nguyn Hà ông (Dong Nguyen /wn/), a Vietnam-based developer, and released by.GEARS Studios, a tiny, independent game company also located in Vietnam. The game is played in a side-scrolling style, with the player controlling a bird that must fly through rows of green pipes without colliding with them. The game was developed over many days by the creator, who used a bird protagonist he had made for an abandoned game in 2012. The game was launched on May 24, 2013, but its popularity skyrocketed in early 2014. It was panned for its difficulty and claimed copying in visuals and game mechanics, while it was praised by others for being addicting. It was the most downloaded free game on the iOS App Store at the end of January 2014.

Flappy Bird’s creator stated that in-app ads were bringing in $50,000 per day during this time.

On February 10, 2014, Flappy Bird’s developer withdrew the game from both Apple’s App Store and Google Play, citing remorse about what he deemed the game’s addictive nature. Because of the game’s popularity and abrupt removal, phones having it pre-installed were put up for sale on the Internet for exorbitant rates. Following the removal of Flappy Bird, copycat games grew popular on the iTunes App Store, and both Apple and Google have banned apps from their app stores for being too similar to the original. On many platforms, the game has also been released via unauthorised means. Flappy Birds Family, a redesigned version of Flappy Bird, was launched specifically for the Amazon Fire TV in August 2014.
