Donald Dell (born June 17, 1938 in Bethesda, Maryland, United States) is an attorney who formerly worked as a professional tennis player, captain of the United States Davis Cup team, and administrator. David Dell was one of the earliest professional sports agents, having represented professional tennis players Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith, Jimmy Connors, and Ivan Lendl during the heyday of professional tennis (1975 to 1985). In addition, he was the co-founder of Professional Services (ProServ), one of the nation’s first sports marketing companies, which he founded in 1970 with Frank Craighill, a fellow law partner, and was one of the nation’s first sports marketing organisations.
Dick, his younger brother, works for ProServ and was a member of the University of Michigan’s Number One Singles team. In 1969, he won the Big Ten #1 Singles Championship. Dell, along with IMG’s Mark McCormack, is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of sports marketing and the sports agent industry. Dell published a book in 2009 titled “Never Make the First Offer,” which was based on his extensive experience. According to Jack Kramer’s book, Jack Kramer, The Game, My 40 Years in Tennis, Dell was also a key player in the establishment of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in 1972 alongside Cliff Drysdale and other tennis professionals (1979).
During the ATP’s early years, clients of ProServ controlled the organization’s leadership positions. ProServ and one of its young agents, David Falk, would go on to represent professional basketball players such as Patrick Ewing, John Lucas, and Michael Jordan. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Jordan chose Dell’s ProServ and Falk as his first sports agent after signing with the company. ProServ was purchased by SFX Sports Group in 1999, and it subsequently became a part of Clear Channel Entertainment, which is based in Los Angeles.
