Born to Los Angeles car dealer, Don Hankey took over his father’s business and amassed a vast fortune. It was in 1972 that he took over the helm of his family’s Ford dealership and he has since built the automobile services empire Hankey Group, which makes up the most of his income through subprime auto lender, Westlake Financial Services. The latter was valued at more than $1 billion by Japanese trading company Marubeni that invested $250 million for 20% of Westlake Financial in 2011. Just one year later, Westlake Financial revenues topped $500 million. The Los Angeles-based Hankey Group also includes Knight Insurance Co., car-lending software firm Nowcom, Midway Car Rental and several other businesses. Even though with current residence in Malibu, Hankey still goes to the office every day and starts his day before 7 a.m.
