Does x ray only show bones

X-ray radiography: Detects bone fractures, certain tumors and other abnormal masses, pneumonia, some types of injuries, calcifications, foreign objects, dental problems, etc. Mammography: A radiograph of the breast that is used for cancer detection and diagnosis.

Different parts of the body absorb the x-rays in varying degrees. Dense bone absorbs much of the radiation while soft tissue (muscle, fat, and organs) allow more of the x-rays to pass through them. As a result, bones appear white on the x-ray, soft tissue shows up in shades of gray, and air appears black.

X-rays don’t show everything. Muscles and ropy fibres (ligaments) don’t show up in a useful way on an X-ray. And some problems, like a bleeding stomach ulcer, don’t show up on X-rays. If your X-ray doesn’t give a clear picture, you may need other tests.

X-rays use beams of energy that pass through body tissues onto a special film and make a picture. They show pictures of your internal tissues, bones, and organs. Bone and metal show up as white on X-rays. X-rays of the belly may be done to check the area for causes of abdominal pain.

Röntgen referred to the radiation as “X”, to indicate that it was an unknown type of radiation. The name stuck, although (over Röntgen’s great objections) many of his colleagues suggested calling them Röntgen rays.

A CT scan generates high-quality, detailed images of the body. It’s a more powerful and sophisticated x-ray that takes a 360-degree image of the spine, vertebrae and internal organs. You may have a contrast dye injected into your blood so the doctor can see your body structures more clearly on the CT scan.

X-rays are often a good tool for determining if arthritis exists and, specifically, what type. Common types of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis.

Because they’re easily available and affordable, X-rays are usually the first imaging technique used to assess osteoarthritis or forms of inflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

Key findings on radiography. The key radiographic findings of constipation are the presence of large fecal burden throughout the colon, luminal fecalomas, and a relative paucity or absence of luminal gas [3]. Feces appear as soft tissue opacities with internal mottled air (Figures 1 and 2) [3].
