Neil Diamond began his career by writing and playing his songs for demos after being let off from his job at Sunbeam. Instead of choosing to make music his career, he simply began to value it more and more.
He obtained his first recording contract from Jack Packer, a friend from high school, and the two of them collaborated on the Everly Brothers-inspired duet “Neil and Jack.”
Cashbox and Billboard newspapers commended them despite the failure of their singles “You Are My Love at Last” with “What Will I Do” and “I’m Afraid” with “Till You’ve Tried Love.”
In 1962, he entered into a solo artist contract with Columbia Records. Despite the success of 1963 single “At Night” with “Clown Town,” Diamond was fired from the record business and spent the next seven years penning music for other publishing companies.
Does Neil Diamond have Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s?
How old was Neil Diamond when diagnosed with Parkinson’s? During his 50-Year Anniversary World Tour in January 2018, Diamond received the PD diagnosis. Even though he feels unable to tour, he has kept up his health regimen in the hopes of one day being able to return to the stage. He stated to the Associated Press (opens in a new window or tab):
“Well, I’m doing pretty well. I’m active. I take my meds. I do my workouts. I’m in pretty good shape. I’m feeling good. I want to stay productive … I just can’t do the traveling that I once did, but I have my wife there supporting me (and) friends.”
“It does have its challenges, but I’m feeling good and I feel very positive about it. I’m feeling better every day. [I’m] just dealing with it as best I can, and just keep the music coming.”
