The St. Louis Cardinals revealed on Sunday that longtime broadcaster and well-known personality Mike Shannon had gone away at the age of 83. His death’s cause wasn’t made public.
Shannon began his baseball career with the Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1958. He was born and reared in St. Louis. When the team won the 1964 World Series, he started out in right field as a starter.
He entered the major leagues in 1962 at the age of 23. Later, in 1967, he switched to third base to make room for Roger Maris, and he played there from the start of the Cardinals’ 1967 World Series victory.
Shannon’s game-tying two-run home run against Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees helped the Cardinals defeat Ford’s team in the opening game of the 1964 World Series.
After nine seasons with the Cardinals, he decided to end his playing career in 1970. He finished his career with a batting average of.255 and 68 home runs.
Shannon worked in the Cardinal’s front office following his playing days. In 1972, he transitioned into the broadcasting industry, where he remained for 50 years until his retirement in 2021.
He also worked as a radio announcer for St. Louis Cardinals NFL games and for NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week. With the Cardinals, Shannon won the National League pennant in 1968 as well as two World Series championships in 1964 and 1967.
