Damon was born on October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the second son of stockbroker Kent Telfer Damon (1942-2017) and Nancy Carlsson-Paige (b. 1946), an early childhood education professor at Lesley University. His father was of English and Scottish ancestry, while his mother was of Finnish and Swedish ancestry; her surname had been changed from Pajari to Paige. Damon and his family spent two years in Newton.
His parents divorced when he was two years old, and he and his brother moved to Cambridge with their mother, where they lived in a six-family communal house. Kyle is a sculptor and artist.
He stated that as a lonely teenager, he felt he did not belong. He had difficulty defining his own identity as a result of his mother’s “by the book” approach to child-rearing.
Damon enrolled at Harvard in 1988 and appeared in student theater productions such as Burn This and A… My Name is Alice. He later made his film debut at the age of 18 with a single line of dialogue in the romantic comedy Mystic Pizza. As a Harvard student, he appeared in small roles such as the TNT original film Rising Son and the ensemble prep-school drama School Ties.
He left university in 1992, a semester (12 credits) short of finishing his Bachelor of Arts in English, to appear in Geronimo: An American Legend in Los Angeles, erroneously expecting the film to be a big success.
