Due to health issues following hip surgery, Australian comedian Barry Humphries, well known for his portrayal of Dame Edna Everage, was sent to a hospital in Sydney right away.
Following a fall the previous month, Humphries underwent hip surgery in March at Sydney’s St Vincent’s Hospital.
On Wednesday, April 19, his bedside was visited by family and friends. Humphries continued to find “moments of humor” from his hospital bed, according to entertainment writer Peter Ford, who was speaking on Channel Seven’s Sunrise.
His family’s statement, which was released late on Wednesday, echoed this:
“Barry would like to thank everyone for their encouragement and well wishes, but he would want even more”.
Fans may be wondering if Dame Edna, often known as Australia’s First Lady, would perform again given his poor health.
Does Barry Humphries still perform?
No, Humphries announced his retirement from live performance in March 2012, citing the fact that he was “beginning to feel a bit senior” and intended to leave the entertainment industry.
