AT&T Stadium roof can be opened or closed since it has a retractable covering. The roof can close during rain or harsh weather situations.
The operable skylight was designed by Walter P Moore and was built under the consultation of Uni-Systems. The panels are two translucent tensile fabric membranes.
AT&T Field’s retractable roof opens 256 feet by 410 feet of 660,000 square feet roof. The bi-parting panels of the covering are controlled by a rack-and-pinion drive system which closes and opens the operable skylight in just less than 12 minutes.
The field was built at the cost of $1.15 billion and can hold up to 80,000 audiences. The dome is supported by 14,100 structural steel keeping it intact at its place.
The new playfield officially came into operation during the 2009 football season where the Cowboys played their first preseason home game on 21 August and regular season home game on 20 September.
It was 13 May of the same year when Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys team officially announced that the name of the newly constructed field be kept as “The Cowboys Stadium”.
AT&T Stadium Roof Policy
Dallas Cowboys Stadium roof policy states that the upper covering can only be closed during hazardous climatic conditions including rain.
The rule is guided by NFL policy for retractable ceilings. Other clauses of the regulation read:
- The exception for not closing the dome is when it rains in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter or prior to or during any overtime period.
- It is not to be opened throughout the rest of the entire game if it has been closed at the beginning or during the game.
- If any decisions regarding the opening of the panels are made then they must be opened no later than the time when the team takes the field for pre-game warm-ups.
The retractable covering was built with the purpose of turning hazardous weather conditions into a non-factor so that not a single NFL game inside AT&T will be affected by what’s happening outside.
Other Features Of The Field
The Cowboys Stadium is really a masterpiece that was built as a part of Jerry Jones’s vision to honor the team and the fans with a fascinating home.
Fans of the team are well-known in the League for their loyalty and maybe the field is a result of the same dedication and love of the followers. The dome when opened brings a rectangular exposure paying homage to their previous home field in Texas.
The luxury suites, Concourses, Concessions, and other different areas are installed with more than 3000 LCD displays in order to extend the fans’ viewing options beyond the actual playfield.
There is also the installation of two giant operable window walls that are designed in such a way that they offer a panoramic view of the atmosphere surrounding the field.
The open-air feel at the venue is exciting but whenever the climatic conditions become worse it can be closed and the environment inside can be controlled.
The entire field is protected against strong winds through a series of lock and tie-down designs where the audiences not only feel comfortable but much safer as nothing seems to affect the inside environment.
