In our last Do You Know?, we discussed the first three times the Super Falcons made it to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In this edition we will look at the other times the Falcons
qualified for the global showcase and how well they did in the competitions.
At the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the global football governing body maintained the 16-team format it adopted in the previous edition, with Nigeria faced with the exact same challenge they previously met with.
Nigeria was selected into Group B alongside, North Korea, Sweden
and the United States.
The Falcons drew their first game against Sweden and suffered a
2-0 defeat to North Korea.
Nigeria failed to move into the knockout stage of the tournament
following a final loss to the USA ladies.
The Super Falcons were were grouped alongside Germany, France and
Canada in group A of he tournament.
The Falcons were defeated in their opening game by France, after
which the team suffered another heart wrenching 1-0 defeat defeat to Germany.
The Nigeria team won their last game of the tourney, but the late
minute comeback was not enough to help the team quality for he next stage of
the competition.
In 2015 FIFA adopted a 24-team format for the Women’s World Cup,
giving room for three teams to qualify into the knockout stage from each group.
Nigeria was grouped alongside familiar World Cup foes, United states, Sweden and Australia in Group D of the World Cup.
Although the Falcons were among the favorites to qualify from the
group stage, they were met with great difficulty and were unable to advance to
the knockout round.
Nigeria drew Sweden 3-3 in their first game, before the team
suffered a 2-0 defeat to Australia. In their final game, they were stopped by
the USA team 1-0, crippling every chance of making it further into the knockout
stage.
