Do NFL Practice Squad Players Travel With The Team?

NFL practice squad cannot travel with their team during game days. The team can bring them to home games and activate them before 90 minutes of game time.

Every NFL franchise contains a practice squad (PS), which is also known as a Taxi squad. They are a part of the franchise, but not the active roster. Their main purpose is to help in the practice sessions for the roster, by being extra partners and emulating the opponent’s playstyle.

A PS athlete has the opportunity to get invited to the main roster if they have developed well and show potential. The franchise will also seek to strengthen its PS since having strong PS players will automatically accumulate better training and development results.

The introduction of PS came during the 1940s when the then-Cleveland Browns coach Paul Brown invited a group of athletes who were available as reserves.

What’s more interesting – the Browns owner, McBride, hired these athletes on the payroll of his own Taxi firm to bypass the League’s paycheck regulations.

When Can NFL Teams Sign Players To Practice Squad?

NFL teams can sign practice squad members from 30th August at 12 pm ET. The 53-man roster cut deadline is 29th August.

After the preseason ends, each franchise is obligated to make a roster cut down to 53 from the 90 present in the training camp and preseason matches. This implies that more than 1100 athletes will not see themselves making it to the active roster.

However, 512 of the athletes can see a positive outlook by getting signed as a PS player. Once the active roster is finalized, the PS members can be assembled as well. Every franchise will look to select the best remaining players for the PS immediately from Wednesday’s 1 p.m.

The NFL franchise cannot sign other team’s PS players directly in the 2023 season. They have to follow certain conditions.

Only when the team releases the PS players or they become free agents, then the other franchises can trade for them. For instance, unless the Bears PS member gets released or goes to free agency, signing the player to the Patriots PS is impossible.

The League also restricts opponents from poaching the PS members from the other team. If the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are facing in 6 days’ time, any transfer of PS players is not possible.

Moreover, if a franchise seeks to add another team’s PS athlete to their active 53-man roster, then they can directly sign the player. The signed player will then receive a paycheck worth 3 weeks.

A team can also promote their own PS player to the game day team right before 90 minutes of the match fixture. The coach can select the needed athlete without the tension of cutting the 53 men. This led to the extension of the roster to 55 men on game day.

Eligibility Rules

NFL League minimum practice squad is 16 players. A player who has received 6 games in the NFL active roster cannot join the squad.

When the athlete has completed his 53-man roster experience in a particular season, then, they cannot enroll with a PS of any franchise. Similarly, there are other regulations set as well.

If a player has been with the team for no more than 2 years, they are counted as an Exemption player. Likewise, a Veteran is classified as when they have an unlimited number of accrued seasons.

A free agent is also available for signing, who were on the active list for no more than 9 regular season games during their accrued seasons.

Average Salary Of NFL Practice Squad Player

NFL practice squad makes $12,000 per week on average. The Veteran players can receive $16,100 to $20,600 on a weekly basis.

The PS members are divided into 4 groups based on their football experience. Group I to III players are the recipient of $216,000 for the entire regular season. Meanwhile, the Group IV (veteran) could get to earn $370,800. The salaries are also paid during the bye week.

The NFL teams salary cap is used in the practice squad’s remuneration. The salary cap for one team is $224 million. The franchises have to adjust their PS athlete’s wages accordingly.

Over the years, the PS members have witnessed a rise in their wages. In the 1990s, the wage per week was below $4000. The number increased in the 2000s and went to $4350 from the 2003 seasons.
