Dirk Tillotson’s friends and colleagues have identified him as the victim of the fatal late Friday night shooting in a home in Oakland’s Maxwell Park area.
They were surprised and in grief for well-known educator Dirk Tillotson, who was killed in his home and became the city’s 105th homicide victim, as Oakland homicide detectives attempted to piece together the details surrounding his murder.

Dirk Tillotson was a 52 years old well-known educational advocate who had a wife and an adult son.
Tillotson’s work in education activism has taken him all over the world, from helping him to reform schools in Qatar to work on educational equity issues in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, to helping to start the first autism inclusion school in Harlem, New York, to expanding translation services for Oakland students.
“The world has lost one of the best advocates for education,” said Paul Le, who co-founded Great School Choices with Tillotson to ensure that all students have an equal chance at academic success. “That’s what we lost last night, even if he never bragged about himself.”

It’s possible that the home of prominent Oakland education-equality advocate Dirk Tillotson was targeted who lost his life in an unexpected way.
Oakland police spokeswoman Kim Armstead believes that the incident appeared to be targeted, however, couldn’t identify if the target was a person or an East Oakland home in the Maxwell Park neighborhood.
The incident occurred at the couple’s home on Monticello Avenue, which is mostly residential, at almost 11 p.m. on Friday. At least one individual broke into the house while both victims were sleeping, according to authorities.
According to officials, Tillotson was awakened by the commotion and was shot after approaching the perpetrator, who also shot his wife. However, there had been no arrests of any suspect whatsoever.

Dirk Tillotson was married to his wife Amina Assefa, other marriage details being unknown.
She is currently 44 years old and was living with her husband and adult son in their home in Oakland. She was wounded in what appeared to be a targeted incident as she was shot by an unknown person.
However, the police confirm that she is out of danger and in a stable condition after the injury she sustained in the attack.
