Dino Danelli (born July 23, 1944 in Jersey City, New Jersey) is best known for being one of the founding members and drummers of the rock band The Rascals. “One of the finest underappreciated rock drummers in history,” he has been dubbed. Danelli, a jazz drummer by background, had worked with Lionel Hampton and was performing R&B in New Orleans by 1961. In 1962, he formed Ronnie Speeks & the Elrods and returned to New York. He also collaborated with legends like Little Willie John on occasion. In 1963, Danelli met Eddie Brigati (a local R&B pickup vocalist) and Felix Cavaliere (a classically trained pianist). Danelli and Cavaliere went to Las Vegas later that year to try their luck with a casino house band. They stayed there until early 1964, after which they returned to New York
City. Danelli formed the Rascals with Cavaliere, Brigati, and a Canadian-born guitarist called Gene Cornish in late 1964. Cavaliere and Danelli went to Las Vegas in January 1965 to perform with vocalist Sandu Scott, but they returned to New York in February. They made their stage debut with the Rascals at the Choo Choo Club in Garfield, New Jersey, later that month. Danelli and Cavaliere frequently sought new repertoire for the ensemble to perform in addition to playing drums (before Cavaliere and Brigati started writing original music). He credited their visits to record shops for songs like “Mustang Sally” and “Good Lovin'” in a 1988 interview. He was a member of the Rascals for seven years, from 1965 to 1972. Danelli and Cornish founded the band Bulldog in 1972, and they released two albums before breaking up in 1975. For a brief while, Danelli and Busta Cherry Jones, previously of Gang of Four, were members of the Leslie West Band. Danneli and Cornish were later added to the group.
