Difference between whale and dolphin

What makes whales and dolphins different?

The first difference is the size of their dorsal fins relative to their body size. While dolphins tend to have well-defined dorsal fins, whales comparatively have tiny or even no dorsal fin (such as the Beluga Whale).

Are dolphins whales yes or no?

First thing’s first: all dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins. It may sound confusing, but all dolphins are simply smaller types of whales. The whale order (Cetacea) is divided into several different families, one of them being Delphinidae (this includes all oceanic dolphin species).

Why is an orca a dolphin and not a whale?

Orcas are classified in the Delphinidae family of dolphins and porpoises. All delphinids belong to the Cetacean order within the toothed whale (Odontoceti) suborder. This means that all dolphins technically are whales; however, the term “whale” is usually reserved for baleen whales of the Mysticeti suborder.

What do dolphins have that whales dont?

A dolphin has a hooked or curved dorsal fin (except for those species that don’t have a dorsal fin) whereas a porpoise has a more triangular dorsal fin, and generally speaking, dolphin bodies are leaner, although porpoises’ are a little more chunky. Dolphins are also more “talkative” than porpoises.

Dolphins at swim-with attractions have been known to seriously hurt humans by butting them and the resulting injuries have included lacerations and broken bones.

Are dolphins smarter than humans?

Are dolphins smarter than humans? Current tests for intelligence indicate that dolphins do not possess the same cognitive abilities as humans and are thus not the “smarter” species. Like humans, dolphins possess the ability to beneficially alter their surroundings, solve problems, and form complex social groups.

Do dolphins have 2 stomachs?

Dolphins have two stomachs, just like cows. The first one stores the food, and the second one is where digestion takes place. Each dolphin’s dorsal fin is unique and can be used to identify them from each other. Most species of dolphins live in saltwater, but some of them thrive in freshwater.

Do dolphins see color?

Mirror cells behind the retina reflect light back out of the eye, causing it to shine like a cat’s in the dark, and increasing its ability to function in low-light. However, dolphins lack the cones that enable colour vision, so they are likely to be colour blind.

Why are dolphins so special?

Dolphins are a lot like pet dogs– they’re sociable, playful and curious creatures. And, best of all, they seem to get along well with humans. If sharks are the scary ones of the sea, dolphins are the opposite– the friendly ones. Interestingly, dolphins exhibit signs of compassion and altruism.
