Difference between raw and jpeg

Raw offers more creative processing flexibility

The JPEG processing applied by the camera is designed to produce a good-looking image right out of the camera, and this processing cannot be undone. A raw file, on the other hand, is processed by you; so you can decide how the image will look.

So why does nearly everyone recommend shooting RAW then? Because they are simply superior files. Whereas JPEGs discard data in order to create a smaller file size, RAW files preserve all of that data. That means you keep all the color data, and you preserve everything you can in the way of highlight and shadow detail.

It’s because when you shoot in JPEG mode, your camera applies sharpening, contrast, color saturation, and all sorts of little tweaks to create a fully processed, good-looking final image.

JPEGs from the camera have sharpening applied to them, so they will always appear sharper than the unprocessed, demosaiced RAW image. If you save your RAW image as a JPEG, the resulting JPEG will always look exactly like the RAW image.

Many professional photographers do shoot in RAW because their work requires post processing high quality images for print, commercials or publications. Another thing to note is that JPEG is not often used for print work since it is too lossy. Printers output lossless file (TIFF, etc.) formats with the best results.

When converting from raw to jpg you lose options for further image manipulation. This is not quite the same as image quality. You can make a black & white jpg from a raw file, it will have full resolution but there is no way to make the jpg color again.

Double-click and select the RAW image you want to convert to JPEG or TIFF. Click [File], and from the menu that appears, click [Convert and save].

Shooting RAW ensures you are capturing as many colors in an image as possible, creating photos with a higher color range and color depth. This is why a brightly colored landscape or a vibrant fashion scene with a range of shades and tones will likely turn out better if you shoot in RAW vs. JPEG.

When editing an image, consider saving it as a TIFF, instead of a JPEG file. TIFF files are larger, but will not lose any quality or clarity when edited and saved repeatedly. JPEGs, on the other hand, will lose a small amount of quality and clarity each time they are saved.

In summary, TIFF files are bad news because: They lack important data (often constituting evidence) that is present in the original, native files; They waste valuable space on your computer; They are difficult to manage because a single file can be converted to hundreds of separate TIFF files; and.

The principal disadvantage of TIFF is file size. A single TIFF file can take up 100 megabytes (MB) or more of storage space — many times more than an equivalent JPEG file — so multiple TIFF images consume hard disk space very quickly.

How to convert a TIFF to a JPG file? Choose the TIFF file that you want to convert. Select JPG as the the format you want to convert your TIFF file to. Click “Convert” to convert your TIFF file.

TIFF is uncompressed. Since TIFF does not use any compression algorithms like JPEG or GIF formats, the file contains more data and results in a more detailed picture.

PNG is a lossless compressed format, which makes it good for both photographs and text documents. A PNG will generally be larger than a JPEG, and sometimes smaller than a TIFF. PNG supports more colors than GIF images as well as improved transparency.

As a general benchmark: 90% JPEG quality gives a very high-quality image while gaining a significant reduction on the original 100% file size. 80% JPEG quality gives a greater file size reduction with almost no loss in quality.

TIFF – Highest Quality Image Format

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is commonly used by shooters and designers. It is lossless (including LZW compression option). So, TIFF is called the highest quality image format for commercial purposes.

When printing or publishing commercial or professional work, use TIFF. For designs that require the use of photos that require transparency, PNG is recommended. For web designers and graphics artists who work with responsive websites, SVG is the preferred format.

TIFF files

TIFF is best for any bitmap images that you intend to edit. TIFF files don’t compress to make for smaller files, because they are meant to preserve quality. They offer options to use tags, layers, and transparency and are compatible with photo manipulation programs like Photoshop.
