Difference between ko and tko

There are four ways to win a boxing match: If the opponent is knocked out (KO) and is unable to get up before the referee counts ten seconds, the other boxer wins by a knockout (KO). If the opponent is injured during the fight and is unable to go on, it is considered a technical knockout (TKO) and the other boxer wins.

A TKO counts as a knockout on the winner’s record. KO means that your opponent won the match by either knocking you unconscious or by knocking you down for more than the referee’s 10 count. TKO means that the referee stopped the match because you were not fighting back.

For example, if a boxer is knocked down and is unable to continue the fight within a ten-second count, they are counted as having been knocked out and their opponent is awarded the KO victory.

Mike Tyson didn’t have the best defense. However, he wasn’t open for business the entire fight like Muhammad Ali. Tyson (five KO losses) was knocked out more times than Ali (one KO loss) but he didn’t take nearly as much punishment. Tyson wins this category because unlike Ali he made an attempt to defend himself.
