Difference between forester and outback

The Outback was rated a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, while the Forester was rated only a Top Safety Pick. Both cars earned five out of five stars in NHTSA’s front and side crash tests and four stars in rollover tests.

Ground clearance is the same, at 8.7 inches, so both elude obstacles that snag mortal vehicles. Outback is almost two inches wider. Outback is almost eight inches longer.

2018 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the roomier compact crossovers, with more cargo space than the Outback at 39.2 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 75.8 cubic feet with it down, as well as similar passenger volume.

The top three concerns from car owners about the Subaru Outback focus on the 2011-2015 model years, with the 2015 model having the most overall complaints and the 2013 model often rated as the worst choice due to the high repair cost.

Subaru 2.5-L Turbo Four Cylinder

Owners of 2009-14 Subaru Impreza WRX and WRX STI models have launched a class-action lawsuit, alleging the pistons and PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) systems in the high-performance 2.5-L turbocharged engines may overheat or malfunction, requiring a king’s ransom in repairs.

One of the core reasons that Subaru reliability has dropped is due to the problems that the Outback and Legacy have had with in-car technology. This is a common reason for declining dependability in a number of makes and models since the early 2000s. Many cars today have a great deal of new and complex technology.

Subaru EJ engines have numerous ongoing issues that Subaru refuses to address; head gasket failures, “ring land” failures, rod bearing failures, high oil consumption, etc. Any of these issues can, and often do lead to catastrophic engine failure.

Despite Subaru’s track record for reliable vehicles, their 2.5 L engine has become almost infamous in the automobile industry for having problems. Specifically, these engines have been susceptible to leaking head gaskets and it was such an ongoing issue that it almost became a joke amongst mechanics.

Common complaints related to the Subaru Forester’s engine revolve around excessive oil consumption. The worst model year seems to be 2014, which gets the most complaints about excessive oil consumption. The Subaru Forester doesn’t garner as many complaints from owners as some other compact SUVs do.

The breakdown of the affected models are the Subaru Forester from 1999-2010, Impreza from 1999 to 2011, Outback from 2000-2011, Legacy from 2000-2009, and Baja from 2003-2005. The wide range of Subaru head gasket problems means that numerous models have engine issues.

How long will a head gasket repair last? The original head gaskets on a Subaru 2.5 engine tend to fail between 100,000 and 150,000 miles. Most replacement gaskets last just as long.

But the list of cars is good for anyone looking for a used vehicle. CR and IIHS say the best Subaru models are the Subaru Forester (2016 or newer), Subaru Outback (2013 or newer), Subaru Crosstrek (2018 or newer), Subaru Impreza (2014 or newer), and Subaru Legacy (2013 or newer).

5th Generation (2015-2019)

Its engine lineup remained the same, and of course all-wheel drive remained standard. It was the largest Outback to date and the most successful. Sales surpassed 150,000 units in 2015, and the following year the Outback was Subaru’s best-selling model.

The base four-cylinder engine is adequate for regular driving and delivers decent fuel economy. They note, however, that you may want to spring for the six-cylinder engine if you do any towing or frequently travel with a full load of cargo or passengers.

Vibration and shuddering upon acceleration. The most common problem Subaru Outback owners may face is serious vibration and shuddering in the engine. Many reported the vibrations upon acceleration specifically. Those who experienced these issues owned Outback models with an average of 112,000 miles.

It’s more reliable, its interior is more upscale, it has more impressive cabin tech, and it has more cargo space (in most cases). In addition, the Outback is the better overall performer thanks to its strong turbocharged engine option and composed car-like handling. It can also tow more than the Forester.

But specifically, what makes the Outback so popular? Many buyers like the built-in ruggedness of this Subaru. Its standard all-wheel drive is a definite plus. And with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Outback can go off-pavement to places that an ordinary station wagon wouldn’t be able to navigate.
