Difference Between Exclusive And Non Exclusive Franchise Tags

Difference between exclusive and non exclusive franchise tags is that a player with the exclusive tag cannot talk to the other teams while under contract.

The Franchise tag come into use to keep hold of their key players who are expected to leave as a free agent. Also, it stops players from leaving the club.

A franchise tag is basically a contract to retain the team’s top player to stay at the team for at least another season.

Exclusive franchise tags prevent a player from signing with another team and assure the player higher than 120 percent of their previous contract or the average of the top five salaries at their position.

It is a system used in the NFL to stop a players’ transfer from one team to another. It is a form of franchise tag in which the team has exclusive bargaining rights with a specific player for a certain period of time.

Likewise, when a team employs the non-exclusive franchise tag, the player is free to talk to any other team of interest for potentially signing with them.

The team that applies the non-exclusive franchise tag, will have a chance to match or offer a higher contract the player gets from another NFL Team. But if they fail to match, they will receive compensation in the form of draft picks from other teams often in two first-round picks.

Every NFL team has the option of applying the franchise tag to one of its upcoming free agents. Whether to use the exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag is up to the team.

Non Exclusive Franchise Tag Meaning Explained

The players are still open to negotiating with other teams in the league even when a team applies the non-exclusive franchise tag. If a long-term contract is not negotiated, the player will play that season with the franchise tag on. If they come to an agreement, the franchise tag is withdrawn.

Non exclusive franchise tag means the original team has the opportunity to match any offer made by another side if the player accepts a contract with them. According to the conditions of the offer sheet, the player stays with the original team if they match.

As previously stated, the original team receives two first-round draft picks from the team that signed the player if they decide not to match the offer. The purpose of this compensation is to demotivate rival teams from signing franchised players.

Whether it is an exclusive or non-exclusive tag, using the franchise tag affects the team’s salary cap. The team’s salary cap is affected by the tagged players’ pay, which may limit their capacity to sign additional players.

NFL team Baltimore recently used the non-exclusive franchise tag on QB Lamar Jackson and convinced him to stay with the team.

In conclusion, the NFL’s Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag enables teams to keep their valuable players for a season more while allowing such players to open talks with other teams.

It carries the danger of losing the player if another club is ready to pay in the form of two first-round draft picks as compensation, but it’s a strategy used by teams to maintain control over their best players and possibly move toward a long-term deal.

Franchise Tag Vs Transition Tag

In the NFL, teams can keep a player’s rights for an additional season using the franchise tag and transition tag. They differ in their effects and financial implications for the player and the team. The differences between Franchise tag vs transition tag are:

There are two types of franchise tags: Exclusive vs non exclusive franchise tag. A player who has been given an exclusive franchise tag by a team is not permitted to speak with other teams, as was previously stated numerous times. For one more season, they are essentially committed to their present squad.

The player can bargain with other teams if they have a non-exclusive franchise tag. The original team has the right to match any offer made by another team and keep the player if the player accepts it and signs with them. The original team will be compensated with two first-round draft picks from the new team if they decide not to match.

The player’s compensation for the following season is calculated using either 120% of their wage from the prior year or the average of the highest earnings at their position for that year.

The franchise tag tends to pay out more money to players than the transition tag, but it also limits their ability to bargain with other teams. Without a long-term deal, the team is permitted to keep the player on its roster for an additional season, but doing so can be costly.

Contrariwise, A player who has been transition-tagged by one team is free to talk with other teams. The original team has the option to match any offer made by another team and keep the player if the player accepts it.

The highest wages at the player’s position for that year are averaged out to determine the player’s wage. Compared to the franchise tag, the transition tag typically entails reduced wages for players, but it also gives them a greater chance of seeking offers from other teams.

There is no draft pick benefit if the player signs with another team, unlike the non-exclusive franchise tag. Only the right to match the offer remains with the original team.

In conclusion, the franchise tag restricts a player’s options more than the transition tag does in terms of contacts with other teams. It usually does come with a larger pay. With the transition tag, a player is more free to bargain with other teams, but the original team is still free to match any offer and keep the player.

How Does The Franchise Tag Work?

Teams are granted an additional year of service time from the player they tag by using it. When a team is unable to reach a contract extension with a player they want to keep, they frequently employ this franchise tag.

Teams have limited time to agree to a contract extension after applying the tag. Usually, the deadline falls in July, after which teams and players are unable to resume talks until the following summer. Players would rather have long-term contracts that provide more stability.

Recently, the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson were unable to strike a long-term agreement after 25 months of talks. Baltimore turned down Jackson’s request for a fully guaranteed contract at signing.

So, Baltimore gave Jackson a non-exclusive tag, letting him negotiate with other teams. This raised the possibility of Jackson leaving the Ravens, especially when the former league MVP asked for a trade. Moreover, the Ravens signed Jackson to a five-year, $260 million contract, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

To make it easier we have listed out the NFL franchise tag rules down below:

  • Types of Franchise Tags: A team may choose to employ an exclusive or non-exclusive franchise tag, but it may only do so once every calendar year.
  • Salary Calculation: The Franchise tag NFL salary is calculated by averaging the highest earnings for the position in the previous 5 years, or 120 percent of the player’s salary from the prior year. An exclusive tag utilizes the average of the top five earnings at all positions, whereas a non-exclusive tag uses the top five incomes at the position with the highest average salary.
  • Deadline: Usually in late February or early March, to franchise tag qualified players.
  • Player’s Rights:When a player gets tagged, they are unable to play for another NFL team, but they can choose to sign the one-year franchise tender or hold out until a long-term agreement is made.
  • Salary Cap: The franchise tag salary is deducted from the team’s salary cap for that season, which can prevent them from signing other players.
  • No Tag Removal: The franchise tag is deemed guaranteed once a player signs it, and the team is unable to remove it for that season.

How Many Times Can You Franchise Tag A Player?

The rules and fees differ depending on how many franchise tags per team. However, the franchise tag can be applied to a player 3 times by a team.

When a team applies the franchise tag for the first time on a player, they must offer the player a 1-year deal for the average of the top 5 earnings at their position in the previous year, or 120% of the player’s previous year’s salary.

Prior to the franchise tag signing date, the player and the team can negotiate a long-term contract. By the deadline, a long-term agreement must be made; or else, the player will be forced to play the following season under franchise rules.

Similarly, a team must offer a player an extension of one year worth 120% of their previous year’s salary if they opt to place the franchise tag on them for the second time in a row.

A long-term contract can be negotiated between the player and the team, but if no deal is made before the deadline, the player will be subject to the franchise tag for a second straight year. The cost to the team of applying it for a second straight year increases drastically.

A team is required to offer a player a one-year contract worth 144% of their previous year’s salary if they use the franchise tag on them for the third time in a row.

When applying the franchise tag for a third year in a row, the team will have a significantly greater liability. A player becomes an unrestricted free agent without a future franchise tag option from that team after three straight seasons of being franchise-tagged. They are then free to sign with any team of their choice.
