Difference between egret and heron

Egrets /ˈiːɡrət/ are herons that have white or buff plumage, develop fine plumes (usually milky white) during the breeding season. Egrets are not a biologically distinct group from the herons and have the same build.

Great white egret

Great white egrets can look similar to little egrets, but they are much larger, the same size as the grey heron.

Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers. A pure white subspecies occurs in coastal southern Florida.

Great Egrets are tall, long-legged wading birds with long, S-curved necks and long, dagger-like bills. In flight, the long neck is tucked in and the legs extend far beyond the tip of the short tail.

Great egrets have all white feathers, but they do get dressed up for breeding season. During that time, a patch of skin on its face, by its eye, turns neon green, and long plumes grow from its back.

The Egret is Athena’s messenger: The Goddess of Wisdom. People would interpret its crackling shriek as an omen that the Goddess was watching over someone, sailors in particular. The Maori also have a great reverence for Egrets.

The Native Americans also appreciate the inherent patience, wisdom, and good judgment of the heron. This is something that is highly valued in their society, hence the heron has evolved into a symbol of good fortune and successful journeys (especially when the person who sees it has come to fish).

Heron Christianity Symbolism

Christianity particularly associates this bird with good luck and long life. Just like the blue heron, the egret symbolism too focuses on being at peace with oneself and the world, being in a state of balance and calmness throughout.

According to North American Native tradition, the Blue Heron brings messages of self-determination and self-reliance. They represent an ability to progress and evolve. The long thin legs of the heron reflect that an individual doesn’t need great massive pillars to remain stable, but must be able to stand on one’s own.

The white heron symbolizes the independence and wonder of nature, which must be preserved against the destructive forces of industrialization and greed. When Sylvia sees the heron’s spectacular perspective on the world from the top of the tree, she makes a moral choice to refuse to help the hunter eliminate the bird.

Conservation versus Greed

At the heart of “A White Heron” lies the conflict between conserving nature and exploiting it for financial gain. The stranger wants to shoot, eliminate, and stuff the elusive white heron for his personal collection, and he offers Sylvia $10 to help him find it.

Cranes‘ necks are a shorter than those of herons, and they typically hold them straight. Herons curve their necks into an “S” shape and when they are flying they pull them totally back, while cranes necks’ stick straight out. Cranes also have shorter beaks than herons.
