What is the difference between divergent and convergent give an example of each?
Divergent evolution occurs when two separate species evolve differently from a common ancestor. Convergent evolution occurs when species have different ancestral origins but have developed similar features. A good example of convergent evolution is the similarities between the hummingbird and the hummingbird moth.
What is the difference between convergent and divergent evolution quizlet?
In convergent evolution, species evolve from the different species but develops similar characteristics, like wings of birds and insects. In case of divergent evolution, species evolve from same species and gradually give rise to new species like Darwin finches which have evolved in around 80 new species.
What are examples of convergent evolution?
An example of convergent evolution is the similar nature of the flight/wings of insects, birds, pterosaurs, and bats. All four serve the same function and are similar in structure, but each evolved independently. Some aspects of the lens of eyes also evolved independently in various animals.
What is an example of divergent evolution?
Divergent evolution occurs when related species develop unique traits due to different environments or selective pressures. A classic example of divergent evolution is the Galapagos finch which Darwin discovered that in different environments, the finches’ beaks adapted differently.
Can you give two examples of convergent evolution?
Some Other Examples of Convergent Evolution
Streamlined body shape of dolphins, sharks and (extinct) ichthyosaurs. The evolution of echolocation in whales and bats. The paired shell shape of bivalve mollusks and brachiopods. The silk producing ability of spiders, silk worms, silk moths and weaver ants.
What is an example of divergent?
Classic examples of divergence in nature are the adaptive radiation of the finches of the Galapagos or the coloration differences in populations of a species that live in different habitats such as with pocket mice and fence lizards.
Which two species are closely related but have undergone divergent evolution?
Two species that are very closely related and have undergone divergent evolution are the kit fox (Vulpes macrotis) and the Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus).
What are the 5 Fingers of evolution?
Terms in this set (6)
- Evolution. Change in allele frequencies over time.
- Genetic Drift (Pinky Finger)
- Non Random Mating (Ring Finger)
- Mutation (Middle Finger)
- Gene Flow (Index Finger)
- Natural Selection (Thumb)
Are sharks and dolphins an example of convergent evolution?
We know that dolphins and sharks are not closely related, and they didn’t inherit their similar body shapes from a common ancestor. Their streamlined bodies, dorsal fins and flippers are the result of convergent evolution.
Are analogous structures convergent or divergent?
Analogous structures arise from convergent evolution, but homologous structures do not. Convergent evolution is the opposite of divergent evolution, in which related species evolve different traits.
What are the example of convergent?
Convergent evolution is when different organisms independently evolve similar traits. For example, sharks and dolphins look relatively similar despite being entirely unrelated.
Are eyes convergent evolution?
Biologists estimate the eye has evolved independently more than 50 times in species such as flies, flatworms, molluscs and vertebrates. It’s called convergent evolution.
What is a convergent trait?
Convergent evolution: Convergent evolution occurs when two organisms that lack a recent common ancestor end up more and more alike as they adapt to a similar ecological niche. The organisms have convergent phenotypes, and their similar structural forms are called analogous structures (such as bird wings and bat wings).
What is analogous trait?
In morphology, analogous traits arise when different species live in similar ways and/or a similar environment, and so face the same environmental factors. When occupying similar ecological niches (that is, a distinctive way of life) similar problems can lead to similar solutions.
What does the word Convergent mean?
1 : tending to move toward one point or to approach each other : converging convergent lines a tropical cyclone characterized by convergent airflow.
What is an example of coevolution?
In the context of evolutionary biology, coevolution refers to the evolution of at least two species, which occurs in a mutually dependent manner. An example is the coevolution of flowering plants and associated pollinators (e.g., bees, birds, and other insect species).
What are the two types of coevolution?
Two Types of Coevolution
- Predation is when one organism kills and eats another organism. The prey is the species that gets eaten by the predator, which is of course the species that eats the prey.
- Parasitism is when one organism benefits by damaging, but not killing, another organism.
What are disadvantages of coevolution?
Predators and prey
The coevolution of the two mutually imposes selective pressures. These often lead to an evolutionary arms race between prey and predator, resulting in anti-predator adaptations. The same applies to herbivores, animals that eat plants, and the plants that they eat.
Are birds coevolution?
Birds are often important actors in coevolutionary systems. For example, predation by birds largely drives the coevolution of model and mimetic butterflies. Birds, of course, are presumed to be directly involved in many coevolutionary relationships with their competitors, predators, prey, and parasites.
Is symbiosis a coevolution?
Symbiosis– Any close relationship between species, including mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. Coevolution– The evolution of 2 or more different species each adapting to changes in the other.
Is coevolution the same as convergent evolution?
What is the difference between coevolution, convergent evolution, and divergent evolution? Coevolution: The mutual evolution of two different species interacting with each other. Convergent Evolution: The process by which unrelated species become more similar as they adapt to the same kind of environment.
How is it possible that all of the birds can live in the same area of one another without starving?
How can a large variety of birds eat and live in the same area of one another without starving? They will be “selected for” (natural selection) while birds without the most favorable traits will be “selected against” and will most likely not survive.
Do birds stop eating when full?
Birds can be forgiving if a feeder is empty for a few days, but a feeder that is consistently empty won’t attract birds. Wild birds won’t starve if feeders are empty since they get most of their food from natural sources, but they also won’t return to an unreliable food source.
What kills birds instantly?
Teflon and Non-stick Cookware – Overheated Teflon can cause almost instant death of your bird. Your bird should never be anywhere near Teflon or other non-stick cookware when it is being used. Metals – Tin found in aluminum foil, gum wrappers, and cans is toxic to birds.
